Hey guys :D

As you know, DmC: Devil May Cry hasn't performed too well sales-wise :( Now we've seen a lot of this game both in terms of the good and the bad, but recently I've noticed some people (even journalists) criticizing the fans and even going as far as to call them spiteful for not buying the game, and thus contributing to its poor sales and the reduction of the brand.

As such, I wanted to get your opinions on this article, which was written in response to those blaming the fans for the poor sales:

I'm eager for any discussion on it and would love to hear what you have to say!

Thank you for taking the time =)

Maybe the more extreme fans, but otherwise, maybe the game didn't just appeal to as many people as NT and Capcom had wanted. A combination of bad PR, comments that were seen as inflammatory and maybe just the style and art direction of the game did not appeal to everyone.

Let me list up whos fault it is for DmC not selling well:

1. Capcom - greedy arseholes that tells you "We will listen to fans and create DMC 5 IF FANS WANT", 5 years and counting + DmC has been out for more than a month: and no DMC 5 announcement.

2. Media: Taunting and antagonizing fans and gamers alike. Telling YOU what to like and not, and that you can screw yourself if you dont like the game.

3. Ninja Theory's Creative Producer: Tameem antoniades. Made statements that came off as arrogant or disrespectful.

4. DmC - the game itself.

So as you can see the same media that blames the fans for sales, is the NR 2 contributing factor in my list as to why DmC sold so little for a AAA game.

I don't have a problem with people not buying the game. What MY problem is with some of the spiteful idiots is that they just love to shove the sales in my face (especially with MGR) along with the problems the game has when the other games had it too. NO game is perfect for christ sake!

I dont think anyone has critisized gamers for not buying the game? Nobody expects people to buy a product they dont want, but not buying a product yourself and actively discouraging someone else from buying said product, which has happened with this game, is something else entirely.

As for the hair, it may not be the sole reason but thats where it started. From that first picture 3 years ago, certain sections of "fandom" have had it in for this game. The hair is like a catch all summary of all the trivial differences that fans have twisted into sticks to beat his game with. Its not a perfect game by a long way, but some of the critisism aimed at it is as laughable as the hair colour change.

Personally, while I dont think the online hatred helped the game, I'm not convinced it caused too much of a dent either. I suspect its a niche title, in a niche genre and even if it had been a Capcom inhouse produced DMC5, it probably would have sold a similar amount.

Not to mention the childish anti-DmC "true" fans who act as if they directly caused a lack of sales and take credit for "choking it out before it could potentially succeed." There are immature "fans" on both ends of the spectrum who like to snipe each other, it's like this in the Sonic Fandom...

Well, yes and no. If you read the article, there's a quote in the beginning where a journalist basically implies that fans were spiteful for not buying the game, and I've seen quite a few other claims along similar lines. In theory you are correct, but this was quite emotional and as such this criticism emerged, not just from gamers but journalists too.

Also, discouraging others from buying a product is alright if you think about it. If you find a game to be great, you'll tell your friend(s) to go buy it. But if you don't like a game, and they ask you about it, you'll probably tell them to avoid it. I know the extremes of this were a bit different, but contextually it's not really horrible.

Yeah, although there was a lot of hate towards the appearance and attitude and character of Dante, and even then it wasn't just about the hair. It was the loss of Dante's identity. Agreed with you though that a lot of the criticism is laughable, but not all of it. I've talked with plenty of serious fans and their complaints were legitimate.

You'd be surprised. Devil May Cry 4 sold very well and not just in Japan. It was pretty popular. It's very likely that being out of the game for a number of years caused interest to dwindle, but you do make a good point that it wouldn't have made a huge dent.

@Meg
Thank you! =) I wrote it and I was looking for discussion on it as I like debating and feedback whether positive or negative :p So this is great for me to see.

You're right on the money as well. I recall bringing up one or two of those points in the previous DmC article (the one linked in this one), but well said =)

Actually, they have. If you go back a few pages a go trough some posts there was alot of blaming of people here for not buying the game.

Anyway, the article is a good read and a fair assesment of the situation. No one should buy what they don't want nor should anyone make them feel bad or uncomfortable for not spending their hard earned money on something they don't want.

I, personally, blamed sales on the game been practically a new IP and it gets new IP numbers.

Really? OK, thats daft, unless they were critisizing someone for playing a pirated version instead of buying, you have to respect peoples choices.

Actually...that's kind'a been admitted by some people that they DID pirate the game because they wante dto play it, but didn't wann'a to SUPPORT it, so they got it illegally, which is clearly contibuting to the lack of sale; someone wants the game, but claims that they don't want to show "support" to the game, so they pirate it and get to enjoy it, claim they didn't, and use that as justification to pretty much steal it.

And then complain when the pirated copy breaks down, like they're entitled to a functioning copy that they stole.

The Sonic fandom was one of the worst I've seen. One thing I noticed was that they're NEVER satisfied. EVER. They complain so much. I'm glad I got out the mess. -_-

As far as sales go, some of the hardcore DmC fans had a small factor in effecting the opinion of the game for me. I've read comments where they would complain at someone who had a different opinon that wasn't to their liking . They came off as pricks. And I think to myself "do you really think you're gonna get them to change their mind with you acting like that?"

Like you said though, this can go both ways as well. I've seen hardcore DMC fans be jerkoffs too. I hate how the fanbase is seperated like this (thing again it could've always been like this I really don't know)

Overall, I think DmC got way more grief than it deserved. I've been a Devil May Cry fan since the demo showed up with Code Veronica and DmC was in no way shape or form a betrayal. What Capcom did with Resident Evil is a betrayal. What Capcom did to my beloved MegaMan is almost devastating. Ninja Theory giving this almost 12 years old franchise potential and much needed originality unlike Capcom who hit a creative dead end with DMC 4 is what this series needed.

The very first Devil May Cry is still my favorite of them all but DmC did some good and introduced some pretty good things this series should keep here on out. I love the way DmC controls and I'm glad that stupid forced style system didn't rear its ugly head in here again. DMC 4 might have looked well in numbers but that doesn't mean it was well received. DMC 4 was dubbed the worst Devil May Cry since 2 and obviously Capcom doesn't give a sh!t about the series. If Capcom gave a f*ck then you do NOT make something as pathetic as DMC 4 after something so good as DMC 3. It was a cash grab and nothing else pushing the Devil May Cry name through the ringer just because they wanted to shake it down for sequels.

Let them hand it off to someone like NT. At least they gave a f*ck about their work and went forward with creative confidence despite being bashed by a stupid fanbase at every turn. I've just about had it with Capcom which is why you won't see me defending them. Also, I never found anything on NT supposedly insulting the fanbase. Searched high and low and found nothing. Where does that claim even come from?

Sonic fans didn't file a petition to the White House. Yea, Devil May Cry fans are now officially one of the worst and you can't defend them. Don't even try.

You seem to have many problems with those who don't like what you do.

To start off, usually when you and two other people defend this game you either hide details or make stuff up. And you've done it in the past. And the reason we supposedly shove the sale numbers in your face is so you'd face the truth and realize that, That game is nothing but mediocrity at it's best.
We don't claim other games to be perfect or anywhere near perfect. We or at least, I claim it to be nowhere near perfect and a disgrace to the Devil May Cry name. I'm not saying it's a horrible game, I'm saying it's a horrible Devil May Cry game.

Alright, alright. Put down the gasoline and step away from the fire.

We want to discuss the article, not to settle other DmC related issues.

Thank you! Finally someone managed to say it wasn't the fans fault. (Except the Extreme Anti DmC 'true' fans and the Extreme Pro DmC fan's saying to anyone "Oh my god you don't like the game!?!? Then your a Dumb*** and not even fan", it is pretty much there fault).
