Be nice and courteous, and people will be nice and courteous to you. Japan is quite hospitable to tourists as long as you command a mutual sense of etiquette.
I do want to look up some etiquette rules as preparation for the trip, to make sure I know what being nice and courteous in Japan means exactly. From what I've already read though it seems to come down knowing their customs and just being repsectful about it.
Just learn a few street phrases if you aren't fluent in their language. One thing that helps is that large cities like Tokyo or Osaka have a lot of English language options for tourists, and simply saying something like "Ie Nihongo" (No Japanese) will tell them that you're a non-native or need help in shops or restaurants.
