New World Empires is a browser-based Flash game. It is precisely what it says on the tin: a strategy game based in European colonial era. Game is an online multiplayer, which means that you play against a combination of human- and computer- -controlled opponents. Each player gets to control one of various European states, and determine its economic, diplomatic and military policy. There is basically one goal: get enough points to win. This cannot be achieved without conquest, be it of other states, colonial territories, or more likely both - points are gained by acquiring and developing provinces, and one has to have a certain percentage of points for victory. Therefore, strong military is a must have; however, game also requires good diplomacy, as well as management of resources - that is, good economic policy.

Resources are food, raw materials, minerals, goods, luxury goods, manpower and money, and they accumulate constantly. Each province produces one resource, and distribution of resources is uneven, yet logical. Colonies in Americas and Africa produce more luxury goods - which are luxurous precisely because they come from so far away. Food-producing provinces are more common in southern countries, and so on. This forces the player to adapt, and to shape his strategy and foreign policy based on very realpolitik factors. "Which resources do I lack? Where can they be find? Do I trade for them, or gain them through conquest?" It also means that one's playing style and environment may be very different depending on whether one starts in Netherlands or Southern Italy.

But ultimately, it is impossible to win without expanding. And if you do not conquer, somebody else will conquer you. "Conker or be conkered", so to say. Which is where we arrive at the topic of warfare. There are three basic types of troops: infantry, cavalry and artillery. These are further divided into "light", "heavy" and "modern". Generally speaking, infantry beats cavalry, cavalry beats artillery, and artillery beats infantry; but you can always win by just deploying more troops. Infantry has good firepower and moderate speed, cavalry is fast, while artillery is extremely slow but powerful. Light units focus on speed, heavy on shock power, while modern have both. This means that one has to balance between various factors and requirements; as distances increase, so does importance of speed. Lastly there are naval units which are produced in shipyards instead of barracks. They are not required for expansion - ground troops will simply embark on ships in port when in transit - however, ground units at sea cannot fight, and thus require enemy ships to be destroyed before they can attack transports. This then requires building naval units, which also have different fighting strength and characteristics.

To be produced, units have three requirements: resources, infrastructure and research. Various units use various resources in various degrees. Heavy units use more minerals, light units use more food, and mercenary units use luxury goods. Units are built in barracks, which have to be developed to a certain level in order to unlock units: light infantry can be built in Lvl1 barracks, while modern artillery requires Lvl4. Lastly, units have to be researched to be built. This research is divided in eras, which unlock with time. New era is unlocked every 5 days, and it allows further progress, thus giving an impression of historical progression. This means that player has to adapt unit mix to the timeframe.

Provinces have levels - a maximum of 10 - which determine resource production, as well as number and types of buildings that can be built. Conquered provinces have to be upgraded, otherwise they will rebel if there are no troops present - and sometimes even if there are. Colonies on the other hand are prone to being destroyed by the natives. Once a province is conquered, it gains status of an "Occupied province". These provinces have maximum morale of 25%, high revolt risk, and have no resource production - upgrade as soon as possible. Next comes the "Non-core province", which has maximum level of 6, maximum morale of 100%, and base production of 25%. Lastly there are "Core provinces", which have a maximum level of 10, maximum morale of 100%, and full production. Since victory points of a province - player's victory points are a sum of those of all provinces - depend on province's level and infrastructural development, it is obviously preferable to fully upgrade provinces as soon as possible.
