How Would You Limit Special Moves In Video Games?

Sometimes, your main character may have signature moves like throwing a fireball, some secret sword attack or a devastating grab move.
But how do you balance these abilities in order to not make your character overpowered?

1. ENERGY GAUGE
- Your character needs to fill up a meter before they can use their special attacks.
Example: Bayonetta's Torture Attacks.

2. CONTEXT-SENSITIVE
- Your character can only perform their devastating moves when specific conditions are met, such as standing in front of a dazed enemy. This method will sometimes change the function of your buttons (e.g. the "pick up" button is now the "melee" button when near a stunned enemy).
Example: Melee attacks as seen in Resident Evil 4 & Resident Evil 5.

3. "COOL DOWN" TIME
- The moves have a "cool down" time after you use them, requiring you to wait until they are recharged again.
Example: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants In Manhattan and many, many mobile games.

4. REQUIRES ITEMS
- You can only use the special attacks if you pick up certain power up items.
Example: Picking up Demon cards for the God Reel in God Hand or picking up Spirit Stones for special attacks in Fatal Frame.

5. NO LIMITS
- Your character can perform their special attacks anytime they want but with certain pros and cons, such as how certain moves have long charge or recovery times, some moves will make you vulnerable to enemy attacks or abusing the same move over and over will lower your score.
Example: Several signature moves in the Devil May Cry series, such as Dante's Stinger and Nero's Buster.
