And lastly, Darth Mope Queen being injured should mean nothing in a lightsaber duel. There are records of Sith Apprentices taking Plasma Grenades to the face and still fighting unhindered by drawing on the Dark Side to overcome physical trauma. A crippled Sith, trained by lightsaber specialist Luke SKYWALKER nonetheless, losing to some walking plot hole from a desert planet is laughable.

I absolutely vehemently disagree with literally everything you just said.

TL : DR, TFA takes a steaming, rancid dump on every core principle of Star Wars' mythology. It didn't build on any lore, rose questions where previous films would've answered them, cycled story elements where even the worst of the prequels would've done something different. Anyone impressed w/ everything "new and exciting" in TFA were casuals unaware of everything it stole from EU, or not fans to begin with.

@LordOfDarkness By all means, refute. We have brandy and cigars in the parlor.

I only agree that TFA wasn't that great. But where it concerns Rey, I do not. And sorry, but that's all I'm saying on the subject.

Suit yourself. Also, understand my disappointment w/ Rey stems partially from my love for characters like Mara Jade, Darth Traya and Bastilla Shan.

Not a SW fan, so I'll just say that one should take into account this is a series that spanned decades and went through hands of multiple writers, for which I'm sure the only obligation they got is to make something they think modern audience will like, details be damned. And from what I read about Rey, she is not much different from the standard action hero, except no one holds it against the guys.

@WolfOD64 Besides, the staff argument is easily disproven by simple common sense, without need to delve into SW lore. Combat with a staff is not by any means the same as sword fighting. Skills with those weapons don't translate to each other.

@Viper Let's not turn it into a feminist argument. Her being a woman is not a factor for me.

And besides, males can be at the center of these controversies as well. Just to mention a franchise I am a huge fan of, I remember there were countless debates in the Predator fanbase against Hanzo when he tied up in his duel against Falconer in Predators with an old ass katana, when just in the previous movie, a Pred belonging to a weaker race survived friggin shotgun blasts at point blank pretty much no problem.

I was actually speaking in general, from a low budget tv series to a blockbuster, there are numerous examples of characters doing impossible feats, yet I have never encountered so much complaining like when a woman is involved. Or maybe it's just the current generation, I have noticed we have all adapted this chronic inability to just sit back and let ourselves be entertained, everything needs to be analyzed.

Much depends on the context too though. Like for example, a character meant to be an over the top power fantasy, seemingly impossible feats ain't much of a problem cause that's what they're made for. With more down to earth characters, so to speak, that IS a problem. Regardless of the gender.

For instance, nobody complains about how much of an ultra badass the old Lara Croft is, and she is a female. But you got a bunch of people criticizing the new one cause the writers try to make her come across as more fragile yet she still destroys armies like a Terminator, keeps fighting despite numerous serious injuries etc.

I don't think it's much of a gender problem, rather a matter of the context the character is immersed in. That is just my opinion, but from my experience that tends to be the case.

New Lara Croft is attempt at making her more approachable to a standard female, which love the whole emotional struggle thing. Not obvious physical struggle, though, everyone likes to dream of being a badass, and the game wouldn't be much if they went full realistic.
Also, isn't SW supposed to be some kind of a over the top power fantasy since forever? Flashy effects, rule of cool situations and everything...

In Star Wars there are kinda power fantasy characters, yes, like Han Solo, but it ain't governed by the rule of cool. Its characters are still down to earth in the sense that they don't defy the rules of their own world (except for cases like this, which is still one of bad writing rather than it being the franchise's nature), which is meant to be a believable sci-fi one.

My personal problem with people who do nothing but complain that TFA's was a letdown, is that they mostly just reference Rey as being the entire reason as to why it was. And from my standpoint, that's simply not true at all.
Foxtrot94
Foxtrot94
Well I don't believe she was the only reason. I do think she was probably the biggest one, but not the only one.

I don't mind you not thinking it had that SW's feel to it, and I don't mind if you don't believe what Rey does in the movie. It's when you hold onto the latter just to exaggerate and push the former that annoys me.

Alright, fair enough then. I believe that I've agreed that Rey's powers were exaggerated. Definitely the Jedi mindtrick. I agree on that 100%. And yes, to an extent, I don't believe she would have easily of bested Ren. I just put it down to what I already posted earlier, and I guess they just expected us to go with it. Rey was a good character, had potential, but they handled it wrong.
