Berserk is far better as a manga than an anime (as with all anime, IMO). Can't comment on Gundam as I have yet to watch it, but I'll check it out if I ever manage to detach myself from the zenith of mecha divinity that is the Macross franchise.

I've never watched Macross. People keep telling me to, but the more people recommend me to do something, the less I want to do it.

Even the legendary Gundam series has had so many entries that some were bound to be terrible. I'd recommend starting with "Iron Blooded Orphans", you don't need any prior knowledge to watch it and it's pretty recent so it has great production value.

@DreadnoughtDT Little bit of heads up, Macross is VERY old-school. The original series has very dated animation and 80's style to its characters and story. But I managed to get into it in less than a month, and this is from someone that avoids anime like herpes because of polarizing experiences with it.

But the whole series is on Amazon Prime, so if you're curious, I'd recommend checking it out. Just be sure NOT to watch it dubbed. The localized version was edited and bastardized beyond belief.

I never managed to get into Macross either, maybe one day. I still have a massive backlog of Gundam material to catch up on. 0_o

I'm not really a fan of Iron Blooded Orphans because of how relentlessly dark it is, heh.

Really? I wouldn't say IBO is even one of the darker Gundam shows.

I can't really find myself liking the characters all that much.

Hmm, might I suggest trying "Gundam: Reconguista in G" that was a recent series that was made more light-hearted.

I tried that one too, but the mechs looked a little too clean to me, like they'd never seen combat. Which is weird because I liked Gundam AGE's mechs...

I take no shame in admitting that I don't plan on watching every Gundam show, only the ones that look interesting to me. Some of them look genuinely terrible.

Don't watch all of them, yeah. The ones I would recommend are The 08th MS Team (just don't bother watching the last episode, it adds nothing and it's rather boring), Gundam 00, and if you're looking for a bit of camp, G Gundam. I would recommend avoiding SEED and SEED Destiny. Maybe don't watch Wing, I dunno. It hasn't aged well.

@DreadnoughtDT Hmm, in that case the only other light hearted Gundam show I can think to recommend would be "Build Fighters".

I stopped watching that when I saw Devil Gundam get wrecked by a Jegan. lol

Wing is good, so long as you follow all the political backstaging since that's what ultimately changes the plot and character arcs, Anything from Universal Century is good, But watch MSG Z and MSG ZZ in that order, 00 is fine, Seed and Seed Destiny aren't as bad as the fanbase makes it out to be, just take it with a grain of salt.
I really enjoyed MSG 0096 War in the Pocket, and 08th MS Team is indeed fantastic.

Thankfully they are finally bringing Gundam DVD/Blu-Rays to Europe so I can enjoy them as well.

Oh yeah I totally forgot to mention Unicorn. Even if you don't like UC stuff Unicorn is great.

If you really want something quick and good to dip your toes into, try "Gundam Thunderbolt" I believe it's only 4 episodes long. But I've heard very good things about it.
