In my opinion, the only reason people say gameplay is 'more' important is because it's a game. You're paying money to play it, not watch a story. That's what movies are for. You wouldn't go to watch a movie and say "Wow that film had a great story, but lack of interaction with the characters let it down".
Games will always require solid gameplay first and foremost. A story is a nice addition, not always a requirement. How much backstory do we get on Space Invaders, Tetris, Pacman etc Those are examples of how games only necessarily need to be 'playable' and not require some intricately thought provoking plot with well developed characters and breathtaking worlds.
@KRSkull
It's not silly. We're talking of what games should be about as a medium.
To answer the question, it's not something we can "decide". Games are games, and as such gameplay is generally the most important thing. Though there are a few genre where story is just as important, and maybe even more.
Not saying that story IS NOT important in the absolute sense. In fact it generally is now, it's a standard. But gameplay is generally what should matter more in this medium.
As someone who takes gameplay first, I feel that games that are story-oriented take a huge hit in the "interest" department from me. The only largely story-based game I enjoy is Metal Gear Solid, because that has engaging gameplay on top of the awesome story. Most story driven games that I've seen like all of TellTale Games' stuff and The Last of Us does not have very good gameplay.
That's a whole new argument to be brought into. I'd just say that it depends on how deep they want to go into the story. You'll find a fair amount of games go into a great detail with the story. DMC lacks that, which is why I would agree with @tehrugger that gameplay is more important in DMC.
@KRSkull
I repeat, it's not. Every single medium has its peculiar form of expression that distinguishes it from the others, and gameplay is the one for games. Therefore that's the most important aspect to nail.
@Foxtrot94 It is. Board games and all the other type of games. They are fun to play. Novels and Movies They are fun to read and watch. Videogames takes the play from games and story from novels and movies. and mix them together. forming a new type of fun.
@KRSkull
It is not. You act as if I'm saying story doesn't matter at all. However, videoGAMES are something to PLAY first and foremost, and something to watch/read second.
It's also true that games now have also incorporated the storytelling and cinematic arts in them, and mind you, I don't think those things should not be present. Problem arises when they take precedence over videogames' primary form of expression, sacrificing it.
I agree that both are important. But frankly, I feel when it comes to games, gameplay is more important. I like a good story as much as the next guy (I'm still blown away by how much The Last of Us gave me the feels) but at the end of the day, when I play a game, I just wanna have fun with it
