Character first impressions

There's a lot about first impressions of Dante, but I'm wondering about reactions to the introduction of the other characters.
I don't know if you guys can remember this far back, but do any of you remember your first impressions and feelings about characters like Kat, Phineas, Vergil, Mundus, Bob and Lilith, and how those first impressions changed after playing the game?

I haven't played the game, I will freely admit it. I lost interest in gaming for a while, and my interest came back when the announced DE and 4SE. I have however watched the cutscenes on YouTube so I'm gonna share my opinion anyway.

I'm going to do this in order of introduction:

Mundus: That forehead... It kind of looks painful to have holes in your skin. Also, "I will control the world through debt speech", I was just like, how does that work? When the said his name was Kyle Ryder I was just like... Wow, that is the worst name for an evil villain. I was glad they never brought it up again.

Lilith: That was a surgery gone wrong. Poor thing, hope she sued. I never though much else about Lilith, except that what Vergil did to her was awful. I kind of thought she wasn't really "evil" evil, but evil because of a love she had for Mundus that she knew he would never be returned.

Bob Barbas: Wow, this is an interesting character and addition. I hope they use it a lot. -Was disappointed in the lack of Bob Barbas news announcements-

Kat: What are the thoughts going through your head? (When Dante opens the door to her as bare as the day he was born). Later, I just wanted them to explain the nightmares but they never really did. I liked her design though, how despite the fact she wore short-shorts, she wasn't sexualized. I also liked her voice actor.

Vergil: Holy crap that coat is amazing. And that fedora. Honestly they need to give OG Vergil an outfit as good as that one. I honestly found a fedora at a store that was white and black pin-striped with a blue ribbon, totally my Vergil hat. I wasn't impressed in how they developed him (seriously no lead up to him being the villain besides the fact OG Vergil was - it would've been better if they left that for a sequel). Also any time his voice actor pronounced Yamato, it made me cringe.

Phineas: Dat nose. Dat body. Dat head. And then he just vanished so I didn't think much about him. I did kind of wonder how he knew Lilith was pregnant with Mundus' spawn but besides that...

Kat:
Before Playing - Boring, uninteresting and just another same old supporting character who's most memorable moment was squirrel semen.
After Playing - See above.

Phineas:
Before Playing - Didn't even know about him.
After Playing - Forgot all about him in t minus 10 minutes after he showed up.

Vergil:
Before Playing - He sucks just as much as new Dante
After Playing - See above.

Mundus:
Before Playing - "Me, A God. vs You, a piece of s**t." Seriously? :meh:
After Playing -

Bob:
Before Playing - :meh:
After Playing - See above.

Lilith:
Before Playing - :vomit:
After Playing - Really? The only babes in this Devil May Cry are a boring supporting character and an ugly as hell demon whore? Failure on so many levels.

You know Loopy, if it hadn't been you that posted this thread, I would've said:

"It's amazing how many ways you can ask people "how much do you utterly HATE this game?""

I thought mundus looked like either the kingpin or a guy Ritchie villain.

I thought kat was bald or Lady/Patty.

Phineas could have been pigsy's brother.

Kat
Before playing - she's gonna be a Trish/Lady/Lucia replacement, just to have a woman in the game
After playing - found her fairly interesting after all

Phineas
Before - not a clue he wasn't in the game at all
After - simple plot device, to let Dante know Mundus' weakness

Vergil
Before - facepalm
After - triple facepalm (liked him A LOT more in Vergil's Downfall tho)

Mundus
Before - a banker?
After - ... the most powerful demon, eh?

Bob
Before - he's gonna be the a-hole of the game
After - found him interesting, maybe the most interesting character of the game, aside from the protagonists for me, and I lked his boss battle

Lilith
Before - disgusting, but she's a demon, she's supposed to be... found her fairly interesting after all
After - another plot device (liked her night club stage tho)

First impressions for me were:

Kat: I actually wasn't sure what to make of her in the trailers, but I knew she was interesting enough for me to want to know more about her. When I finished the game, my thought was I wanted to have even more detail about her backstory and a few more scenes with her in.

Phineas: First time I saw that character was in that trailer where they were also interviewing the actors. Again, I thought he was interesting, especially as he was a demon who wasn't antagonistic. But after the game, I felt like he wasn't used enough and they wasted a character that could be even more interesting instead of the short scenes we had with him in.

Vergil: For some reason, all I could think about with him was his hat, and how the rest of his outfit was okay:laugh: Then played the game, and I thought he was a pretty messed up character (in a good way) and certainly liked him as a character because he was so flawed and twisted inside.

Mundus: I remember wondering if he was going to be a character like Arkham due to his appearance. Then finding out he was Mundus as a human, I wondered how that would work. Turns out I liked it by the time I finished the game, but maybe that was down to the good acting too. For me, he was one of the only bad guys in a game who could make a logical argument for why he believed he could do what he did.

Bob: He annoyed me, but that's a good thing as he's supposed to be a demon. In the game, I also really enjoyed his boss battle. Not sure what else I can say about him.

Lilith: Yikes, she creeped me out at first. After playing the game, I liked her level, but I wish they'd done more with her character instead of just one-dimensional plot device. There was some potential wasted there.

I love Dante and Vergil. Dante was the first character I loved. I wish we had more Kat backstory, though.

Bob Barbas-
Before: Giant asshole
After: Bill O' Riley giant asshole

I wanted to cite Bill O'Riley too... but like, everybody mentions him when talking about old Bob, so I avoided that xD

Has NT ever said anything about the resemblance between the two? Like, if it was intentional or not, or stuff like that?

Come on;
Both are sociopaths
Both wanted domination
Both wanted power
Both were willing to kill their brother to do it
Both were spoiled brats

xD not saying they are completely different, but you basically stated they are the same. There are differences too.

But whatever, this is something for another thread.

Fake Geek Girl.
The character that sticks out to me most in this game, is a character I was never really a fan of. That's Vergil.

DmC's version of Vergil has actually made him more of a character with more personality. He isn't just the lame generic evil twin he was in past games. I like villains and I can appreciate Vergil turned in to a more dynamic character this time around. His voice actor was also a lot better. I can't be the only one thinking the original Vergil just sometimes sounded weird. A little nasally. Oh yea, his look is improved as well. He doesn't look like a dumb pirate. He's got this suave and sophisticated presence going on. Except that freaking hat. Lose the stupid hat Vergil.

Mundus I was always a little indifferent to. He did his job as the villain, and that's about it. In the originals he was more of an ominous entity which is kinda cool.

Kat I like and found myself invested in. She's the first girl in this series that isn't just there for eye candy or utterly bland. She's got a history I'm looking to read more in to when I get the prequel comic.

Phineas was also someone I was interested in because of what was implied with his character. He's got the information on Mundus's child and recognized Dante because he resembles his father. I think he and Sparda may have been pretty close and he also has a history with Mundus. Unanswered questions of a more complex history between the demons. I'd like those answers.

Lilith and Bob Barbas are obvious parodies part of the over the top social satire presented in DmC. They provide some laughs in that regard, but also interesting boss fights and levels. One thing no one can deny, is DmC had some damn good aesthetics and creative level design. It was one of the most memorable games to me visually next to Journey in recent memory.

the devil is not as black as he painted
Dante : liked it even from the earliest design appearance, yes, that skinny, beat-up, junkie look.. i myself am in to character designs, and every design on dante is how i want to design my characters.. not so beefy, normal proportions.. not that i commisioned from it, just hobby.. and liking the design even more when playing the finished game, manly look, cool (subjective) clothings, love the VA, love him.. kinda surprised tho, felt very much they changed the whole thing including the story, since it was very different from the earlier trailers.. felt more light the story on the finished game, the earlier trailer suggest heavier theme..

Vergil : this guy looked like monkey and those typical college smartass i wouldn't usually liked.. as playthrough went further, hmm, his okay.. at the end, fudge me this vergil rocks.. playing VD, grew to like him even more..

Kat : they could've go with a better look, i dont like Kat at all

Mundus : is this guy dajjal reference?

Lilith : eww yuck, which was great, they shouldnt look beautiful and clean these demons

Bob : the face was rendered nicely, thought he was some news caster story filling purpose, didn't know he was one of them
