Ninja Theory has received death threats over Devil May Cry reboot

Tameem Antoniades said that Ninja Theory received death threats for handling DmC: Devil May Cry.

Formally titled DmC: Devil May Cry, the game resculpts series protagonist Dante as a Westerner, and takes him on a trip across the possessed city of Limbo. The game's continually shifting, hostile environments are intriguing, and its combat looks silky-smooth, but some fans have found the changed art style hard to swallow. Series creator Hideki Kamiya has expressed disappointment over the new look.

"[Enslaved writer] Alex Garland warned me about it because he experienced a similar thing with 28 Days Later where people were upset that it didn't feature real zombies," Antoniades told OXM during a preview showing you'll read about in issue 81. "And now with his upcoming Dredd movie.

"So I was half prepared for it, although I have to say that it has been pretty eye opening to see some of the creative ways in which people have chosen to vent their hatred. We didn't expect death threats in comic book form or anti-DmC death metal songs!"

Shortly after the game's announcement in September 2010, Antoniades explained that the recast Dante is a "rougher version" of the sneering pretty-boy from previous games.

He feels the outrage will die down as more gameplay footage and impressions enter circulation. "It's pretty hard for me to back the decisions we made without showing actual gameplay to the public. So until that time comes, and it will come soon, I just have to put up with the rage.

"Though I must say, lots of people have come and said that they are now interested in DmC whereas they had previously lost interest in the series. We'll see how this plays out."

Ninja Theory intends to stay true to the original Devil May Cry's spirit where it really counts. "There is of course an expectation from the fans, which is something that has always been firmly in the minds of both ourselves and Capcom. The Devil May Cry franchise is well established and much loved, so we want to keep the essence of what makes the series unique.

"But DmC is a re-birth, so we've been able to explore Dante's early years in the narrative, meaning that if you're entirely new to the series you won't start the game with a disadvantage or feeling that you need to catch up with the story of the previous games first.

"There is a lot of innovation in the game, but where we're dealing with key areas of the Devil May Cry DNA, such as the combat, we've been particularly careful to ensure that innovative features sit hand in hand with the core elements that we're looking to preserve."

Antoniades later added that "combat is something that we are taking very seriously and is one of the areas that we're working closely with Capcom on. Technical, fluid combat with depth is one of the key pillars of the Devil May Cry series and as such is right at the top of our list of priorities. We wouldn't be making a Devil May Cry game if this wasn't the case."

Honestly people are so sad! Do you really think that if you make one complaint on the internet Ninja Theory will completely redesign an entire game simply for your benefit?! Its retarded. Considering the amount of people that hate Dante's New design and say that it's Ninja Theory running wild with a much loved franchise, maybe they should pay a bit more attention to how DmC has changed. After the negative response to the first trailer at E3, notice how in each trailer the design changes. People didn't want an 'Emo' Dante, what happened? NT altered the design so his hair was shorter and ditched the guyliner. Look at the change in design

Also, NT says in an interview "The redesign of Dante was without a doubt the most intensive collaboration" BOTH Capcom AND Ninja Theory spent a long time designing Dante.

LOL its funny how far fans will go once something they loved has been changed lol.

I'm not on board with this new direction myself but I'm not going to take it personally or threaten someone lol.

And atleast NT did change this Dante to look more "presentable" then he did in the initial trailer.

Not to mention he has not been seen smoking a cigarette once (which also ****ed off old school Dante fans) since the initial trailer.

Innovation...? *looksaround* Where? I don't see any. And it's obvious that the writer of the article is biased toward DmC. I know keeping something bias-free is hard, but he/she could of at least tried.

Anyway! ^^ Death threats over stupid things like a video game are nothing new. The creators of South Park have received death threats before for example. In fact I'd say a lot of people in the spot light have received death threats from crazy fans before. It's nothing new. Stupid, but nothing new.

I get that people are upset about the new design but death threats? C'mon.
All I have to say to those fans is this: you're an idiot.
Good that NT is taking it in their stride though. Death threats are pretty scary.

What I will make note on is they say they've 'westernised' Dante. Now, if you ask me, the original Dante already was westernised. Blonde hair, blue eyes - it's the look that westerners class as most attractive. The high school sweetheart, blonde with blue eyes, the cheerleading captain, blonde with blue eyes, the prince of whathaveyou, blonde with blue eyes. Examples: Arthur from The Adventures of Merlin, the 'prince' from A Cinderella story, Fabio from Survivor (come on, I know everyone was voting for him!), the lead male from Beastly, Elena from the Vampire Diaries, Julian from the Forbidden Game, Casper, etc (I think I've made my point). I dunno, maybe it's just me, but new Dante doesn't look 'western' to me in the slightest. The clothing aside. No, actually, I don't think his pants are hanging enough. Where are his boxers? Isn't that a trend, to wear too big pants, smart boxers, and a hoodie? X3
Oh, and don't forget the hot pink rugby shoes. Or even those neon yellow ones.
Okay, okay, I'm done. I'm just kidding. Sort of. New Dante doesn't look western to me but I might be biased because I wub meh blondes.

The creators of South Park have received death threats before for example.
XDDDDDD
I'm sure they're still getting their fair share of death threats. They were interviewed the other day I think, but I missed the interview. Although their humour is pretty offensive, especially to people who have suffered through some of the serious topics they make fun of, for example cancer, or mentally disabled kids, etc.

Normally death threats and petitions if any games developer want to overhaul anything in a game, followed by some kind of law suit dreamt up by the consumers.

I wonder where those death threats came from.

Because you know apparently, death threats to the creators or directors of popular franchises in Japan are not unusual. People can get pretty attached to their favourite characters.

Take Hideaki Anno - who directed the NG Evangelion TV series. Anyone ever wonder why he released some movies afterwards that retold the ending to the show? And why those movies hardly made any sense at all (unless you find an interpretation from a NGE geek online), and why he did what he did with the main characters in it? Apparently some fans were not happy with the TV show ending and threatened Anno's life and the studio building. Hearsay has it that he released the movies partly to give disgruntled fans what they wanted - more straightforward storytelling and more robot action, and a chance to see all their favourite characters again... and partly in revenge for those death threats. If you've seen the movies and know what happens to the most 'popular' characters in it, you'll see what I mean. I've heard rumour that actual photocopies of the death letters sent to Anno feature for a few frames in one of the films, near the end.

In Japan, fans and otaku are used to getting what they want from creators. If they don't, they can get very bugged.

(I reading an interview with the man himself... by the look of it there will be more game trailers before the game is released)

death threats....i just don't even have words to express the vileness. its a video game...a form of entertainment...i can't believe someone would be this obsessed with a videogame that they threaten to harm another person's life.

Sadly...no... they're just releasing them when they feel they need to be released. (if that makes any sense)
