Dante, the main hero from the first game returns in this, his first sequel to continue his crusade of demon hunting in Devil May Cry 2 and attempt to learn more of his dark history. But for his second Playstation 2 outing, he seems to have lost his wise guy attitude that made him so popular in original Devil May Cry and opted for a more mature and somewhat sinister attitude. Although he still chooses to wield his famous Rebellion longsword and custom handguns from the original with great expertise and uses them to dispatch his foes with great pleasure.
His story begins with him being invited to an island by an ageing female warrior named Matier to help defend it from a rich maniac called Arius. In exchange for his services the old woman promises to reveal details of the Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda, and help dante further understand his father better.
Lucia is the main heroine of Devil May Cry and the second playable character. She is apparently the daughter of Matier who is bound to protect the Vie de Marli Island as well as the 3 Arcana’s which are capable of opening a portal to the underworld. Like Dante, she also shares demonic powers and is also holds the ability to transform into a devil trigger state, but unlike Dante, she prefers to use throwing daggers as her weapon of choice rather then firearms.
It is Lucia who originally asks Dante to journey to the island and give his assistance.
Matier is the supposed mother of Lucia, and main protector and guardian of Vie de Marli Island. She is the one who invites Dante to accompany her in defeating the evil demons that Arius has released on the island, understanding that Dante’s heritage and having apparently being part of a clan that fought along side his father in the past, she makes a deal that she will tell him everything she knows in exchange for his help in stopping Arius once and for all.
Arius is Devil May Cry 2′s main villain who is behind all of the goings on at Vie de Marli Island. He is an extremely wealthy man who owns his own company, UROBOROS. Not content with his riches however, he wishes to rule the world and become infinitely powerful. After hearing of the 3 Arcana’s, which are apprently capable of opening a gate to the underworld and unleashing a creature called Argosax, he attempts to gather these three magical items and fulfill his goal of taking over the world.
But unlike Dante’s usual adversaries though, Arius is a human through and through.
While Trish doesn’t have her own distinct story like Dante or Lucia, she makes a welcomed appearance as an unlockable character. Her moves seem very similar to Dante’s at first but she does have a few unique attacks at her disposal.
