The community submitted their burning questions by the truckload, and we picked a dozen of our favourites to forward onto the Ninja Theory crew in order to get some good, hard answers from the Cambridge-based independent development studio that’s in charge of bringing DmC to life. Ninja Theory’s own, lovable ‘Comms Ninja‘ Dom Matthews was the brave soul to take on the task of answering the community-submitted questions and setting the record straight. Read on for the full, exclusive Q&A.

Tiran: What aspects, if any, of the original Devil May Cry series did Ninja Theory feel were the most essential in preserving for DmC?

DM: There is a backbone that runs through the Devil May Cry series that has made the series such a success to date. A strong, charismatic protagonist in Dante, fast, fluid combat that allows players to experiment and explore combos and the concept of rewarding players not just for completing a mission but also for completing a mission with style and panache. All of these are a feature of DmC.

Meg: For the sake of clarity, and to put to bed any still-lingering confusion, what would be the most accurate way of describing DmC: reboot, prequel, parallel universe, or something else entirely? How does DmC fit into the series?

DM: You can compare what DmC is in contrast to the previous 4 games with what Christopher Nolan’s Batman is in contrast to Adam West’s Batman from the 60’s. The game doesn’t sit within the timeline of the previous 4 games, however fans of the existing series will find familiarity with some of DmC’s themes and characters.

Sieghart: What was the reasoning behind developing DmC on Unreal Engine 3 tech, as opposed to Capcom’s own MT Framework?

DM: Initially there was a brief discussion about using MT Framework, but it was really a decision that came down to the amount of time that we set ourselves to make the game. We’ve already got a lot of experience with Unreal and didn’t want to spend a year of the development just learning a new engine. Using Unreal meant that we could really get stuck into the gameplay and content from the start without having to get to grips with the tech first.

Dante’s Stalker: Can you tell us anything about the voice cast? Whom has been hired to play whom, and why Ninja Theory felt that they were the perfect candidates for their respective roles?

DM: We actually capture our actors’ voices, body movements and facial expressions simultaneously, so when we’re casting we’re looking for actors that not just sound right, but move in the right way, have the right physical appearance and complement the rest of the cast with their acting style. Each of the actors bought a real enthusiasm and energy to their roles, which comes across in the game’s narrative.

For now we’re not talking about specifics of which actor plays which character, but we’ll certainly be touching on it in the near future.

ZeroLove: The news of a Devil May Cry reboot is extremely exciting, with many hailing it as the next logical step for the franchise, but there has also been a very vocal minority of hardcore fans that have not been especially receptive to the series’ change in direction. How has both the positive and negative feedback influenced DmC’s development??

DM: It’s our job, along with Capcom, to take Devil May Cry in fresh new direction and that’s what we’re doing. We have a creative direction that we all firmly believe in and we’re confident that both existing DMC fans and those new to the series will enjoy the game. We’re not blind to feedback, but we’re sensitive to the fact that change naturally brings fear. All we ask is that people keep an open mind to DmC and judge it as the game it is rather than the game that you think it is going to be. Every time we release new information about DmC there is a buzz – people care a great deal about the franchise. That can only be a good thing.

chocolateghost79 & StuntXL: In past games, Dante has been privy to a wildly diverse array of ethereal weaponry and supernatural powers. Will the same be true for DmC? And will unique gameplay opportunities arise based on Dante’s angel and devil forms?

DM: Dante can switch between 3 forms on the fly: Human, Angel and Demon. Within each of these forms Dante can switch between weapons and abilities. It’s like a toolbox of options that the player can build up over the course of the game and use strategically in different combat and traversal situations. We’re actually very excited to hand the toolbox over to players and see what they come up with. Just walking around the studio you’ll see people playing the game with very unique styles and pulling off moves that you’d never even thought about. We had a well-known Devil May Cry player come into the studio and play the game for a couple of days and he and I had a lot of fun sharing combat ideas and trying out chains and experimenting. We’d talk about something, I’d go back to my desk and nail it over a lunch break and try and take the chain one step further. He’d then inevitably take it one step even further and show me how it’s really done!

Frantix: Was there any truth to the rumours of Ninja Theory supposedly inviting specific Devil May Cry fans to the studio to play-test DmC and provide feedback? If so, can you divulge just what sort of valuable input was collected from their experiences?

DM: It’s true that the game has been played by some very experienced Devil May Cry players and we’re happy that they went away excited by what we’re doing.

As a rough estimate, how much time on average do you believe gamers will be able to garner from the single-player story mode? Are there any incentives for encouraging players to revisit the game, such as unlockable content?

DM: Once you’ve completed all of the main missions there are some big incentives to revisit them a few times over. There is a lot more to challenge your skills than that first start to finish run.

Z218: Are there any plans to introduce co-operative or competitive multiplayer modes into DmC.

DM: Multiplayer isn’t a feature of DmC.

darkslayer13: What is DmC’s official release date for all territories?

[Ninja Theory did not answer this question.]

2niperwolf: Are there any plans to release a PC version of DmC? If so, can fans expect a simultaneous release alongside consoles?

DM: For now we’ve only announced that DmC will be coming out on Xbox 360 and PS3.

mrrandomlulz: Given the opportunity, would Ninja Theory be interested in also developing a Devil May Cry game set in the original series’ universe?

DM: I think if Capcom wanted to make a Devil May Cry game that was in-line with the rest of the series that they would probably develop it themselves.

Many thanks to Ninja Theory, Capcom and, of course, our brilliant Devil May Cry Community for making the magic happen.

During the course of the interview, Antoniades lifts the lid on some of Dante’s new ethereal weaponry, hints at what we can expect from the terrifying ‘Limbo’ dimension, and reminds us that DmC, while now developed with a much more Western flavour, with still most definitely retain that familiar all-out action vibe that fans have come to expect from the series.

The video is very much worth setting aside ten minutes to watch, especially for those eager to check out more gameplay and learn more of the game’s development.

Today marks the official launch date of the Devil May Cry HD Collection, a high-definition bundling of the first three Devil May Cry games. First released in October 2001, the original Devil May Cry won over gamers the world around for its relentless take on the hack ‘n’ slash genre, combining fast and furious combat with beautiful gothic visuals. Since that time, the PlayStation 2 was graced with an additional two Devil May Cry titles, one faring better critically than the other, but fans have remained gripped to the series since day.

If for whatever reason the original releases somehow managed to skip you by, Capcom are providing you with yet another chance to savour Dante’s first three adventures, in one handy package. Check out the trailer to find out just what all the fuss is about, and why the old school fans are so excited to once again revisit such memorable locations as Mallet Island and the Temen-ni-gru, only with gloriously crisp HD graphics.

One evening Dante starts to feel a bit saddened that he never stays in any proper long term relationship. He tries to take his mind off it but he just can’t. So, in an act of desperation and loneliness he decides to check out a local restaurant holding a speed-dating evening. He’s embarassed at first, but after looking around at the other guys involved, he realises he has a pretty good chance of finding a partner.

The first woman sits opposite – she’s tall, thin and remarkably cute. they talk for a few minutes and exchange jokes but before anything get’s serious, she moves on. Dante keeps calm but can’t help feeling slightly rejected. Then a second woman sits down – she has a much different physique, but her personality is totally soothing and again, he finds it very easy to get on with her. Sadly though, before anything get’s serious she moves on, looking for something else.

Dante, feeling humiliated, is about to leave when a large muscular man sits opposite him, looking at him with intense sexual desire. Dante recoils slightly, not expecting to be confronted with this situation and in a moment of irritation snaps: “So what the hell makes you think I’m gonna take you home huh?!” The man simply smiles and casually replies:

“My name’s Alastor and I’ve already been inside you once.”

Why does the new Dante smoke? He’s pretty desperate for smoking sick style!

Capcom are very much like the Carlsberg of press sheets: they make the best in the world. At the very least: the prettiest. Whilst other publishers might be content with firing off the occasional bar chart to help add some colour to their drab emailings, Capcom have gone a step further and really tarted up their latest press sheet which further details some of the features of their upcoming demon slayer, DmC.

Smokin' Sick press sheet right there.

The sheet reveals that this rebooted iteration of Dante is a careless, tormented individual whom has witnessed nothing but abuse and persecution throughout his whole life. Shame, really, as he seems like a nice enough chap for the most part. His ethereal Rebellion sword, given to him by his father, Sparda, is the youngster’s first line of protection against the demons which hound him so. How Dante has come into the possession of the Ebony & Ivory handguns remains a mystery, but it is explained that their design came about partly due to the development team’s decision to give them the appearance of tools that have “sent innumerable demons to their doom.” Smashing.

DmC could very be coming to a PC near you, reports our resident super sleuth, Chaos Raiden, in our community forums. We’re big PC gamers here in the office, and news of a Windows-bound version of DmC would be music to our ears. However, we’re not recommending that anybody get too excited just yet, though, as no official word pertaining to a PC port has been uttered by neither Capcom nor Ninja Theory just yet.

What does have us somewhat optimistic of a PC version being in the works, however, is the discovery of something really quite promising on the game’s official Facebook page: a mention of the game actually including support of the PC platform.

Again: Capcom haven’t gotten around to officially officially announcing anything just yet, though, so it’s possible that it could go either way, so to speak. We’ll be keeping our fingers and toes crossed that DmC sees a multi-platform release, anyway.

With every brand new bundle of screenshots to hit the ‘net, I’m left wondering how the crew over at Ninja Theory will be able to have us wowed even further with the next lot. This latest assortment of in-game images and promotional artwork sees our rebooted hero pulling off some of his best demon-repelling poses, as well as provides us with a better look at the dude’s rather intimidating, ethereal weaponry.

Almost as if it were hidden in plain sight, the official DmC box art has finally been revealed; and it turns out that we didn’t have to look any further than the official Xbox 360 product page to find it. How long it’s been sitting there, we have no idea. Thankfully, Edsabre, the eagle-eyed devil hunter that he is, was the first to tip us off of this discovery. And, in truth, we’re thrilled to see that the design is much more vibrant and full of life than some of the earlier, really quite drab screenshots might have lead us to surmise. Perhaps this new “emo” iteration of Dante won’t be quite the miserable, angst-ridden layabout that some of us might have initially thought.

We're presuming that the PS3 version won't include their competitor's branding.

At least we know we’ll have something pretty to plonk on our shelves once the game is officially released.

It’s not just Dante who’s been privy to a daring new makeover, the very world itself has received something of a radical overhaul for the upcoming Devil May Cry reboot. And while the series might be heading in a bold new direction, with Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory at the helm, DmC is showing tremendous promise all the same, as the latest episode of Inside Xbox will aptly reveal. DmC Co-producer Alex Jones and Creative Director Tameem Antoniades are on hand to walk us through what’s changed, what we can expect, and why this this latest instalment in the long-running demon-slaying saga could very well be the best one yet.

If nothing else, the folk pulling those bargain-granting levers over at Steam really are a generous bunch. For, you see, one of the game’s that happened to be featured in Valve’s ongoing Winter Sale extravaganza is none other than the rather spiffy Devil May Cry 4. If you’re a console gamer, then you won’t find much joy from the recent spat of Steam sales, but if you’re something of a PC gaming junky, you’ll likely want to make your way over to DMC4′s official product page and cough up some Red Orbs — real-life money would also suffice — in order to secure yourself a digital copy of the game.

Oh, right. Yes, it’s currently on sale for £7/$10 — those are lower prices than you’re likely to see when attempting to track down the game in its brand new and sealed, physical form. Don’t take forever to mind up your mind and part with your cash, though, as, come January 2, 2012, Valve will be pulling the plug on this particular deal. Happy shopping, devil hunters.

Thankfully, this isn’t another one of Arkh– Jester’s jokes; the Devil May HD Collection is indeed currently planned for an early April 2012 release. Or April 3, 2012, if you want to be super specific. I’ll be making sure to embed a giant Rebellion-shaped pin in my calendar, anyway. Do make sure to lay down those pre-orders nice and early, folks, if you fancy securing yourself a copy on release day.

The Devil May Cry HD Collection comes bundled with the first three Devil May Cry games — which had previously debuted on the Sony PlayStation 2 — and remains largely untouched feature-wise, ensuring that gamers whom might have been around to enjoy Dante’s earlier demon-hunting exploits during his non-HD days will be able to immediately slip right back into familiar territory. Of course, the inclusion of high-definition visuals and unlockable achievements/trophies means that even the most old-school of “SSStylish” combo-tricksters won’t be able to resist this particularly tempting trio of classic hack ‘n’ slashers.

Dante might be sporting a controversial new look for DmC: Devil May Cry, but he certainly hasn’t retired any of his old, trademark moves — as you’ll no doubt notice whilst watching the new gameplay trailer which surfaced earlier today on the CapcomUnity YouTube channel. Along with a thoroughly over-the-top combat sequence, we’re allowed a sneak peek at a “secret area” of the game — an area that wouldn’t look too out of place in a Lewis Carroll novel. According to the folks in the know, as it were, this “secret area” will be accessible after hopping into any of the game’s strategically placed portals.

Watch on to see the new and — arguably — improved Dante get up to his old tricks once more.

If this latest DmC trailer doesn’t win over the naysayers, then nothing will. Those of you whom might have been concerned with the notion of the “new” Dante becoming little more than a morose and angst-filled husk of his former self will likely want to check out the young demon slayer’s latest promotional video; gameplay and character animation are both looking even more slick and awe-inspiring than ever. This “rebooted” incarnation of Dante also seems to have lost his dull, lifeless voice and replaced it with something a little more enthusiastic sounding than that which we first heard in the debut trailer . Hopefully, the game won’t be entirely centred around the locating and destroying of “demon cameras”, though. You’ll see what I mean after viewing the trailer.

The oddly-titled DmC: Devil May Cry is due for release at some point in 2012.

The upcoming Devil May Cry HD Collection will see the return of the original three Devil May Cry games, all beautifully recreated with glorious high-definition visuals. Just check out the new trailer to see what the quip-slingin’, snowy-haired gun-for-hire has in store for us come early next year.

While gamers eagerly await the arrival of DmC, Capcom have teased of a brand new Devil May Cry title being released early next next. While not an entirely all-new and original game, the Devil May Cry HD Collection will essentially serve as a re-release of the first three DMC games — Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, and, presumably, the Special Edition version of Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening — only with fancy, remastered HD visuals.

Screen Gems is currently in charge of bringing the project to life. Capcom have so much as confirmed it themselves.

Screen Gems was also responsible for bringing the Resident Evil movies into fruition, starting way back in 2002. A Mr. Kyle Ward has been hired to write the script. The story will apparently revolve around Dante hunting down and executing demons in order to avenge his mother’s murder.

There’s word yet regarding who’s being cast as who, and I’m not sure if there’s anyone out there who can bring Dante to life quite like Reuben Langdon was able to, but it will be interesting to see who gets the gig. Speaking of which, it’s not yet clear which version of Dante we’ll be seeing brought to the big screen — I imagine many will be wanting to see “Classic Dante” given his own movie, rather than the younger Dante from the upcoming DmC reboot that hasn’t been especially well-received by long-term fans of the series.

Well, this is a first. I’d never of thought I’d have seen a Devil May Cry game grace the iPhone. Then again, Capcom has been able to enjoy plenty of success with the iPhone port of Resident Evil 4.

Devil May Cry 4: Refrain is looking to be a port of DMC4, which landed on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 a good long while ago. When the product is launched on the iTunes Store, only Nero will be playable, but Capcom promises to include Dante as a secondary playable character at a later date.

Devil May Cry 4: Refrain will be the first DMC title to grace not only an Apple device, but a hand-held console in general. Will this pocket-sized addition to the DMC series be able to offer the same thrills as it’s older, much less compact, console cousins? We’ll just have to wait and see

I’ve included a few screenshots of Devil May Cry 4: Refrain for your convenience:

Ninja Theory creative director, Tameem Antoniades had this to say during a recent interview with 1up regarding Bayonetta; when asked if he thought Bayonetta looked “cool”:

“Personally, I don’t. I love the game. I think it’s awesome. It’s taken everything — it’s just gone to a total extreme. But in terms of, ‘Do I think it’s cool?’ No, not at all. I think it’s caricatured and over-the-top and very ‘Japanesey,’ and for that absurd style it does that really well, but that’s not what I want.”

I find this quote especially interesting as it helps further cement the notion that DmC will be moving away from the comical, not-entirely-ultra-serious direction that previous Devil May Cry games have adorned. If you’ve read my detailed analysis of the new DmC trailer, you may notice how I’ve highlighted some particularly dark moments with a touch of macabre.

It should also be noted to the newer readers of this website that the original Devil May Cry director, Hideki Kamiya, also took the helm as director of Bayonetta, too. Bayonetta is considered by many to be a “spiritual spin-off”, if you will.
