We analyse the new DmC debut trailer

Okay, I thought I’d try something different — something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and, thankfully, the release of the new “DmC” trailer has allowed me to do just that; what I’ll be doing is this: I’ll be attempting to de-construct the video and highlight particular elements that I feel might be worth your attention. For your convenience, I’ll include the newly released “DmC” debut trailer below:

Who is David Hume?

Time into video: 0.04 minutes.

Two quotes by a gentleman called David Hume will crop up. Who is David Hume, you ask? David Hume was a Scottish philosopher and historian who was born May 7, 1711. Hume was regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and Scottish Enlightenment. Hume, through his life, would go on to publish books which detailed the “science of man” — which examined the psychological basis of human nature.

The two quotes during the debut trailer read:

  1. “Heaven and Hell suppose two distinct species of men, the good and the bad”
  2. “But the greatest part of mankind float betwixt vice and virtue”

The First Voice You’ll Hear

Time into video: 0.16 minutes.

“Young offenders rehabilitation program. Subject: 64432B — Psycho evaluation treatment; day 13. Resume.”

After the mysteriously gruff voice begins speaking, a panoramic view of the city comes into shot. The city is called “Limbo City” — I know this much because of the recently released picture of a roughed-up Dante. At first glance, Limbo City appears very much like a typical, busy American city, but with a much more gothic twist. Although, in the distance, there is clearly an odd looking monument standing some 200 feet tall with two protruding, tusk-like points curled towards the thick green sky — oddly suspicious. The name of the city and the overall vibe of the atmosphere could imply that DmC will be based in Purgatory.

The voice will very likely belong to either a police detective or, more likely, perhaps a criminal psychologist.

The scene changes to that of a dank, grimy and poorly lit interrogation room of, I presume, The Limbo City Police Department, and a figure in a vest — almost certainly Dante — can be seen chained up by the wrists and being monitored through a security camera.

Voice #2

Time into video: 0.36 minutes.

“What…is…your…name?”

To me, this sounds curiously like the new voice of Dante (you’ll hear Dante officially speak towards the very end of the trailer) — only much more grizzled and rather unpleasant sounding. I’ll leave the assumptions up to you.

“Marionettes”

Time into video: 0.40 minutes.

Upon asking the question, the video immediately cuts to footage of Dante battling what appears to be the new “Marionettes” of DmC; and by this, I mean that it is likely that these inky puppet-like enemies will be the first ones you encounter and and will probably be among the weakest of your foes.

Ebony & Ivory 2.0

Time into video: 0.52 minutes.

Dante despatches the monsters easily using a pair of handguns; as much as I would like to call them “Ebony & Ivory”, these new pistols appear to have a much lower rate of fire but possibly may be even more powerful.

Dante’s New Sword

Time into video: 1.08 minutes.

No more Rebellion, I’m afraid. Well, if it is, it’s certainly undergone a “reboot” in a similar vain to Dante; appearing more like a halberd than a typical sword. It is possible, however, that Dante’s new sword will have the ability to shapeshift and possible transform into different weapons — this theory is further demonstrated towards later on in this article.

Psychosis?

Time into video: 1.16 minutes.

During a second encounter with a group of “Marionettes”, Dante can be seen kneeling and clutching his head in pain, with sudden flashes of brain scans visible before the scene shifting back to the interrogation room. This could perhaps imply that Dante is not mentally stable and what he believes to be happening may not be.

Return to the Interrogation Room

Time into video: 1.17 minutes.

“What…is…your…name?”

It’s at this point that the grizzled voice repeats the question as we see Dante visibly disorientated and in pain, mentally flashing backwards and forwards between his encounter with the “Marionettes” and the interrogation room.

Dante’s New Sword — Revisited

Time into video: 1.25 minutes.

Turns out Dante’s new sword has the ability to not only extend by several feet and latch onto objects, but also has the power to fling cars at enemies. Cool.

“Dante” and The Amulet

Time into video: 1.32 minutes.

It’s at this point that Dante officially reveals his name; his new voice confirms that Reuben Langdon will not be reprising his voice acting role as Dante. The new voice actor has yet to be named.

A clear shot of Dante’s necklace also comes into play at this point and, while not definite, does slightly resemble the amulet that was given to him by his mother — as revealed in earlier Devil May Cry games. However, it is extremely likely that this “reboot” will not in any way be canon to the older series, and his necklace may just be that: a necklace, and not an amulet.

Eagle-eyed fans in the Forums were also able to spot a union jack design on Dante’s left sleeve. Does this mean DmC will be set in the United Kingdom? Unlikely, as Limbo City doesn’t look like your typical British hamlet; the lack of any discernible British accents in the clip is a slight give-away. The fact that Ninja Theory — the developers behind DmC — is a limited company based in Cambridge, England makes the badge much more likely to just be a subtle tribute to the country the game is being designed in. A better shot of the badge can be seen here.

To all the people who says reboot is a nice thing to do to Devil May Cry series; think you are reading book series and you are really enjoying it. You finish reading the 4th one and then bam! Everything changes at 5ft one. Would that be annoying? Well we all have different opinions you might like it but I just tried to explain what it feels like.

    • ronnieaddict

Then don’t buy it! I liked Devil May Cry too but have you ever seen how aged the DMC4 is. And after the 4th installment I will ask, where will the story go from there?

The story had become twisted and unforgivable that only 1 and 3 have a good continuity. So basically the book you are referring to is already destroyed by introducing Nero into the picture. Reboot is the only way to erase it.
Though I must admit I doubt that they’d throw the story out the window and start from scratch and took a bold move of destroying Dante and pissing the fans of, there is SOMETHING behind all this…
      I hope it is good.

  • Colt45

Stick to the main story line!!!

  • Javid Wolf

some people say the new dante is our old dante’s young version and he gonna gain powers then he turn to old dante

i think they screwed the whole dmc series story just fuckin bullshit

    • Reaper

I’ve heard that too, but wasnt he supposed to be 18 in DMC3? Also, I believe that if I rmemeber correctly, Dante and Vergil were born with white hair. I’m not trying to blast you by any means, but I’ve heard a lot of people saying that this was a prequel, and I always bring that up. I fully agree with you, though. Unless there is som sort of huge twist, they screwed it up big time.

  • Dana

I hope that at the end of this game it will all make sense…
I really don’t understand why they did ANOTHER reboot, rather than continuing the storyline from DMC4. I mean, I look forward to playing this game, but it would have been nice to keep going where the other was heading.

  • Dante

Whatever happened to our smart ass, white haired, demonic triggered Dante. these new guys better blow me away with the weapons, story, charecters, and foes.

  • dante may cry

dante looks like an ugly pathetic bich

  • miloshkeat

ok i think the devil may cry games are badass WHY THE FUCK CAN THE STICK WITH THE MAIN PLOT

  • fnluke

if ur a true fan of dmc then you know theres 1000s of unanswered question about dantes past and since in dmc 3 he didnt even know he was a demon then itd make a lot of scence that he grew up thinkin he was a normal person… hence looking like a normal person. Honestly besides bein super skinny and not having white hair he looks rly pissed off and a lot more bad ass soooo lets quit our bitchin and see how it is

  • Lambency

Too much reboot baking soda in the canon cake batter. It’s not gonna end tasty.

I know a spokesperson released something about it not being “cool” anymore, but… Uh. Really? Dude, Dante and his quirks and mannerisms and the gameplay and soundtracks are kind of *iconic*. The fanbase likes them. They’re supposed to appeal to the fanbase. So why are they antagonizing the fanbase, instead?

I can’t even look at this as an alternate universe–it’s too… It feels like they took something we loved, ripped out what we loved about it, and made it a semi-original world with the DMC name slapped on it to make a buck. Which bothers me immensely. If you’re going to use the name and use the character (we suppose?), keep to the canon. We like the canon. This is currently pulling a DMC2 and making me want to flip tables.

Taking something like DMC and altering the recipe just won’t end well. Sure, Nero grew on (some of) us, but Dante–*our Dante*–was still a player in the game. So it was a little more alright than we first supposed it would be. DMC5 ain’t gonna be that lucky, from the looks of it. Wulp. I’ll give it a shot when it comes out, but I’m not holding my breath.

tl;dr – NT, nice try. But baking blueberry muffins and calling them red velvet cake is not how it works.

  • Suck it

I don’t think it’s Dante. It looks like the female character from the 3rd game.

  • Pharma965

Hello! fkefddb interesting fkefddb site! I’m really like it! Very, very fkefddb good!

  • Pharme867

    Very nice site!

  • Reaper

So, I have a theory. The brain scan image, the part that is shown larger towards the bottom, it kinda looks like the Priest from DMC4. So, maybe instead of dying with the statue of Sparda, he imprinted himself inside Dante’s mind since Dante has the blood of Sparda in him. MAybe this whole game is running through his psychological unstabability. Like, its all in his head, and he has to fight through it to win back his sanity. In the newer trailers, the landscape changes drastically, and when he does the “Devil Trigger”, he looks like old Dante. So maybe after all this is over, Lady or Trish or even Nero coms to break him out of prison/containment and there’s a huge final boss battle. And maybe Dante figures out whats going on, so he starts smoking for the hell of it. He knows its not real, therefore, it won’t hurt him. Maybe him smoking is like the top in Inception. This could also explain why the game is darker and less lighthearted. Also, it could explain why Dante seemed more laid back when he was smoking at the end of the launch trailer. Maybe he had just figured out what was going on. The enemies could look different because maybe the Preist (or thing thats controlling Dante’s mind) may be morphing creatures that Dante has in his memory. Just a theory, but hopefully this game has some sort relevance to it.

  • meg5493

this game better blow me away right now i’ve heard things of how the game is going to turn out i’ve seen gameplay videos and im not impressed so the final version better be so amazing i love it more than 3 if that can even be done >:I

  • xplaygamer

The more I watch this trailer, the more I hope it’s just a sick joke. I really hope that this guy isn’t the Dante we all know and love.

  • vergil

fuck this is fucking lame. better do another story of it dont use DMC.

  • thecrowing

OMG the combat in the video is even slow! 30fps is not the way to run a Devil May Cry game!
If the PS2 can push 60fps and have slick combat we’ve all come to know and love (with a handful of us that have truly mastered it) I don’t see why the PS360 can’t do the same!

    NT Stop catching on shit!

Heavenly sword was pretty meh! The only thing decent about that game was the MoCap everything else was crap (esp the combat. ahem God Of War rip off much?)
Enslaved was the most underwhelming game ever (I would know I went for Plat!). It seems Tameem has the hots for Andy Serkis, expect him to be the main antagonist of DmC if not the voice of the new Twufa… erm i mean Dante( geez it sickens me to even call him that!)

but to be fair in order to give this game the hate it truly deserves we have to wait for the Final product.
So now we wait to be disappointed.

  • Pharmc732

Hello! adkfbgd interesting adkfbgd site! I’m really like it! Very, very adkfbgd good!

  • martin

Forget the nero part I forgot he says “my name is dante” XD

  • kez

I thought Nero says “Dante, cool name” or something like that and Dante says something like yours isn’t bad either kid, after there second or last fight…can’t remember which, I’ll have to take a gander at it.

  • Qhairel

yeah!!!! but this new Dante is suck

  • Dante

    1) This guy looks like a fucking crackhead with a eating disorder!
    2) Where the FUCK are they going with this storyline from DMC4?
They already confused us about Nero, not explaining his background or his relation TO Sparda!
    3) (Message for Capcom) – Yeah you make badass DMC games but don’t drift too far away from the ORIGINAL DMC storyline, as result you will lose fans of the game series. (Very disappointed with this latest installment).

  • Dunno

    1) He is an Emo or Goth thing (every new game “needs” one of them)
    2) Nero is history Emo Dante is our new “Hero”
nah I think Nero was also a brother of Dante or why would he give him Yamato?
    3) Capcom doesn’t make this game its Ninja Theory. Capcom’s just the Publisher

  • DanteSnow

its funny how stupid u are.

  • Devil_bringer

    I completely agree

  • nagatopain17

hey, this is a reboot. let me repeat this, “REBOOT” as in they are re-doing the series. people like me, and even others, who have either come just recently to enjoy dmc 4 actually think this is a good idea, or looks cool in some aspect. they will get new fans from this, just like new games everywhere else loses and gains fans all the time. don’t ruin it for everyone because you don’t like the look anymore. i repeat yet again, “REBOOT” deal with it.

  • Colt45

I agree 100%. lol they need to get there shit right and stick to the main story line. This is sum FU shit!

  • anacleto

  • kez

I disagree not every game needs one : )

What is needed is NT to wake up and actually listen to the devil may cry fans. But that’s not going to happen because Mr A.T has his head too far up his own arse to be bothered about it.

  • Shi

If you looked into it, the theories are that Vergil is Nero’s father. Nero can’t be Dante’s brother. If you played the games, you’d know this for a fact. In DMC4 His Holiness said Nero wasn’t in Dante’s league.

So, think about it this way, if Nero is Vergil’s son, and Vergil was with a human woman, Nero would be 1/4 demon because Vergil was half, and the mother was human. Thus, not being in Dante’s league.

All in all, he can’t be Dante’s brother, it just isn’t possible.

  • Skull Clown

AS I remember it, Nero was invovled in a incident that changed his arm into the DEvil Bringer. He just happens to have a smartass attitude. Dante sees the good in him and lets him keep the sword.

  • Dante_Fan01

Nero, if i am correct, is a reincarnation of Vergi…hence the demon arm and the yamato choosing him. In some way shape or form…Nero is either related or connected to the Sparta family…i just can’t really figure out how.

  • martinfrog2

    nero is vergils son.

  • trevorwhatever

I think Nero is more of Vergils son and or reincarnaton of some sort thats why the gave him yamato and why his DT looks like Nelo Angelo and why his name is so close to Nelo

  • pedro

in dmc3 special edition there is mention of 3 sons of sparda so to all those who have no clue bout dmc nero is the youngest of them! as for the new dmc who says dantes new sword even has 2 be rebellion this is an origin story u dumbass mo fo’s obviously shits guna be different duh…….the new look is apparently the younger earlier dante and im 100per cent positive the game and story will be the same as all (EXCEPT DMC2) the others in the franchise groundbreaking and KICKASS!!!!

  • crazed demon

first of all you sir must have a defective copy because it clearly says the two sons of sparda and you can read all the other stuff i posted to your other comments.

  • nagatopain17isgay

I don’t want to ‘deal with it’ douchebag, the dmc games had an already excellent storyline right from the first game, i would like to see how it develops, one thing it doesn’t need is rebooting. It may gain new fans, but will lose a lot of old ones who, like me have loved DMC for a long time, if you’ve only played dmc 4, fair enough, but don’t think you know what’s best

  • dante may cry

fuck you all commenters, and fuck devil may cry, and fuck nero, and fuck dante

  • anacleto
