Devil May Cry Novels

Devil May Cry NovelsThe Devil May Cry novels were released to co-inside with the release of Devil May Cry 2. The novels act as prequels to the series, and end right where the original Devil May Cry game began.

Total Novels: 3

Capcom authored two Devil May Cry novels which were written by Shinya Goikeda, illustrated by Shiro Miwa and published by Kadokawa Shoten.

Synopsis

Revered as the Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda and the human woman he loved also had two sons, Dante and Vergil. Now grown men, they each walk different paths in life. Dante continues the legacy of his father by eradicating demons for living. However, Vergil is fully consumed by the power of his dark heritage and seeks another goal.

Devil May Cry: Volume 1

Devil May Cry: Volume 1 begins with the death of Dante’s mother, Eva, and eventually ends up leading into the beginning of the first Devil May Cry video game. DMC series creator Hideki Kamiya was able to work closely with Goikeda during the development of the novel, stating that his depiction of Dante and Goikeda’s depiction are very similar.

Devil May Cry: Volume 2

The Devil May Cry: Volume 2 novel covers the time inbetween the first Devil May Cry game and its sequel, Devil May Cry 2. DMC: Colume 2 features a different art style when compared to Devil May Cry: Volume 1, with the artist taking advantage of shading and ink washes in addition to black and white. The English translators of the novel deliberately opted not to translate the “Beastheads’” name into Cerberus due to the appearance of the Cerberus in Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, despite the obvious resemblance. Likewise, they maintained Vergil’s identity as Nelo Angelo despite feeling that Nero Angelo (Spanish translation: Black Angel) was more accurate.

Devil May Cry 4: Deadly Fortune

On April 1st, 2009, Capcom released the first novel based off of Devil May Cry 4. The novel was written by Kentaro Yasui (proceeding author of Trinity Blood novels) and the artwork was handled by Thores Shibamoto (also in charge of Trinity Blood’s novel artwork).
